Roll Up, Roll Up

15th February 2012

Behold the magnificence of the Salford Carnival. You are cordially invited to the Salford Carnival - fully dressed out with aplomb at Islington Mill (M3 5HW). Set a date in your diaries for Thursday 1st March, 3pm till late.

Come see and then weep in admiration for the incredible work of our Graphic Design students.
Showtime Salford Carnival is a celebration of undergraduate and postgraduate work by Graphic Design students at the University of Salford.

There is so much to see and do. So much so that you may feel a little giddy and need a sit-down. If so you can sit down, be amused and befuddled in the ‘Curious Questions’ booth.

Immerse yourself in carnivalesque festivity.
Meet the students and browse the gallery of their fantastic work

Find out what your future holds through our Crystal Ball and Tarot card readings – who will you end up with? Was Jeremy Kyle really sent from the bowels of hell? Which robot will win Big Brother 3027? Will the Chuckle Brothers ever age?

Impress/scare your friends with photos alongside the Strong Men - see them juggle anvils and lift ship anchors over their heads!

Stare in cold fascination at the Amazing Bearded Lady (more hair than a thousand druids!)

Wheel Of Fortune – win prizes and see the dedicated hardwork of glamorous assistants turning blocks around to reveal letters.

Wall Of Wonder – not a small box or a cupboard but a whole wall of wonder! You know the Great Wall of China? Now imagine a Wall of Wonder. Trust me, you’ll stand in zombified awe at its majesty!

Mystic jpeg – rebooting Mystic Meg in a visually arresting way!

Juggling – chainsaws, babies, Black Mambas, Viking helmets – if it can be thrown in the air, they’ll juggle it!

Magic – how has he done that? Seriously, has he got a small lever up his sleeve? You won’t believe your eyes. You’ll stay awake in bed trying to work it out.

And finally try your hand at ‘Moustache Mayhem!
Wear your fabulous fake moustache (enclosed in our goody bags); pretend you are a Victorian gent, a Dickensian character, a pipe-smoking aristocrat and many other hairy-lipped legends. Have your photo taken and emailed to Sophie Williamson.

Designers Northern Alliance - Coming soon !

Designers Northern Alliance  - Coming soon !

Do the design students at Salford let the grass grow under their feet or let the dust settle for long, after their degree shows?  No not this lot!  Not prepared to let the grey matter set in over the summer period they are already planning and organising DNA’s 2nd major event having already run some very successful satellite events this year.

The inaugural DNA event was held last year and successfully brought together industry, design graduates and academia from the North in a two day event.  This year students are already working through the summer to plan and organise a bigger and better event to coincide with the launch of Media City due to open between November-January.

Plans are underway for a carnival themed DNA Awards event.  The students came up with the idea of a carnival themed event to reflect the meaning of carnival as a celebration and a time to show off their work and network with industry culminating in an awards ceremony to celebrate the best of student work. Some fantastic ideas are being tossed around– but all top secret at the moment! So watch this space!

Roll up, roll up!

Universities and Industry who want to get involved in this lavish event should contact Joanne Greenhalgh, Graphic Design BA(Hons) on 0161 295 6929 or email J.Greenhalgh@salford.ac.uk

Designers Northern Alliance.

The DNA Salford team from the University of Salford organised the last
satellite event for this year, to the run up to the main Designers Northern
Alliance event in June. It was held last Thursday 31 March at The
Wheatsheaf Pub in the Northern Quarter.

Once again, the run up to the event, goodie bags were sent to design studios,
full of foolish fun!

The April Foolish Designers Pub Quiz was an informal networking evening
where the Salford design students were mixed up with design professionals
to make up the teams. A fun design related quiz and plastercine modeling
competition was had by all.

Congratulations to Barney Ibbotson and his team of students who won the
quiz.

Thanks once again to all the design professionals who have supported us and
to the students who have organised and attended the events. It has really
helped to raise the profile for DNA and we hope to see you all in June for the
main DNA Awards event.

Designers Northern Alliance.

Designers Northern Alliance satellite events saw the University of Salford run another successful event last Thursday 17th February at Common Bar in the Northern Quarter.

DNA Salford students organised an industry event based around the theme of Anti-Valentines and was cheekily named ProstiStudent where students offered themselves up for work experience. A week before the event the student team delivered black envelopes to 30 design studios which contained a DNA branded garter, some hot lips sweets and tickets!

On arrival you were invited to choose a calling card from a bowl then mingle ! Participants and students were also asked to bring a piece of design work to hold up as an example of something they loved or hated. Everyone then enthusiastically voted ‘love or hate’ and the winner Rebecca Clark won the very appropriately named typography book handjob!

The evening continued with enthusiastic networking and general socialising between the students and industry professionals who fedback via twitter and email that they felt it was hugely successful. Students have gained yet more placements from this evenings event.

So thank you to all those who gave up valuable time to talk to our students and look out for news on the next event which is our April Foolish Designers pub quiz on 31 March at a manchester pub (tba)!

We hope to see you there but also to see you at the main DNA Awards event in June

DNA Press Release

designers northern alliance press release

06th February 2011

Press Release.

Designers Northern Alliance.

Last year Designers Northern Alliance (DNA) was created to bring together industry, design graduates and academia from the North in a two day event last June.  Following on from the success of last years inaugural event at the Triangle Manchester, this year DNA have exciting plans including online student and graduate portfolios, satellite events hosted by individual Universities, an online zine and competitions.

Last Thursday 27th January 2011 saw The University of Salford, (one of the institutions involved with DNA) host one of many satellite events. Third year graphic design students organised a portfolio surgery which was held at the Soup Kitchen in the Northern Quarter, where students were able to discuss pieces of their design work with design professionals. The event was very busy with enthusiastic students queuing for their chance to present their best work for 10 minutes of valuable feedback. The designers representing top Manchester agencies worked without a break – most managing to stay for the whole duration , between 3- 7pm and continued informal feedback with students long after the intended 7pm finish!

Jo Greenhalgh, Level 5, Communication Pathway Leader at Salford University “A massive thanks to all of you who gave up valuable time to talk to our students yesterday. We all really appreciate it! The portfolio surgery was a huge success, students got valuable feedback and feel their confidence was boosted and many said they wanted to work for your companies! We haven't counted yet but we know quite a lot of students secured placements, which is fantastic!
So once again thanks for your support and please come to the next event”

The next mini event Salford University is running will be on:
Thursday 17 February 2010 – Anti Valentines night- Prositistudent.
Forget the slushy schmoozing – students rebel and grow some balls and offer themselves up for work experience through their work! Auction of students and their work. More details to come soon!

We are working towards the main DNA event, which will be held in June in Manchester.

Check the website, for details of both events to be released soon.
